Topic
IECC 2024: What's New, What's Changed, and What Matters
Overview
The 2024 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) introduces the most significant changes to commercial energy design in more than a decade, fundamentally altering how buildings are planned, designed, and evaluated for compliance. This session provides a practical, design-team–focused walkthrough of the major IECC revisions impacting mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, with specific emphasis on climate zone changes in North Texas, expanded metering requirements, mandatory renewable energy systems, and the new performance-based credit structure. Attendees will gain a clear understanding of how requirements for economizers, demand control ventilation, daylighting controls, controlled receptacles, and energy monitoring have evolved—and how those changes affect system selection, controls complexity, first cost, and long-term operations. The session also demystifies the new Additional Energy Efficiency, Renewable Energy, and Demand Response credit requirements, explaining how credits are calculated, how trade-offs are allowed, and how tools such as ComCheck are used to track compliance. Through real-world building examples common to K-12 and institutional projects, the presentation highlights coordination challenges, design decision impacts, and owner considerations that must now be addressed earlier in the project lifecycle. Attendees will leave with a working knowledge of how to approach IECC 2024 compliance strategically, avoid common pitfalls, and better advise owners on cost, constructability, and operational implications.
Learning Objectives
-
- Identify key changes in the 2024 IECC that affect commercial building design, including climate zone updates, HVAC system requirements, lighting controls, electrical and gas metering, and mandatory renewable energy provisions.
-
- Explain how new energy efficiency, renewable energy, and demand response credit systems function, including credit thresholds, trade-offs, and applicability to new construction, additions, and renovations.
- Evaluate the design and operational impacts of IECC requirements such as demand control ventilation, daylighting controls, controlled receptacles, and energy monitoring on occupant comfort, safety, maintenance, and lifecycle cost.
- Apply a practical compliance strategy using tools like ComCheck and early design coordination to help project teams and owners navigate IECC 2024 requirements efficiently and make informed decisions.
Presenter
Nathan Hart, P.E.
Nathan specializes in mechanical systems design and brings extensive experience working across a range of building types, including primary and secondary educational facilities as well as university campuses. He leads the design of heating, ventilation, and air‑conditioning systems while overseeing project teams and managing deliverables. Nathan prepares contract documents, specifications, and cost estimates, and performs detailed energy analyses to evaluate life‑cycle performance and support green building standards. He is dedicated to delivering efficient, reliable, and forward‑thinking solutions on every project.
