Improving Efficiency with ASHRAE Guideline 36: ASHRAE Guideline 36 establishes standardized, high‑performance HVAC control sequences that improve energy efficiency, occupant comfort, and system reliability. This presentation provides a practical overview of Guideline 36, explaining its intent, structure, and application to common airside and waterside systems such as VAV air‑handling units and terminal devices. Key concepts including trim‑and‑respond logic, zone‑driven resets, and control strategies are introduced in clear, accessible terms. The session also discusses how it fits in with other ASHRAE Standards, how to incorporate/use it in projects, and discuss the pros/cons of different facets of ASHRAE Guideline 36.

Ryan Soo is an application engineer working in product development at Siemens with 12 years of industry experience. In his role, he develops control applications for HVAC systems with a focus on critical environments like laboratories and healthcare spaces. He has a degree in Electrical Engineering from UC Davis and started out with a controls contractor designing Building Automation Systems primarily for buildings in healthcare and biopharmaceuticals in the San Francisco Bay Area.
