Topic
Inflation Reduction Act and 40% Tax Credits for Thermal Storage
Overview
The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 invested $369B in clean energy and GHG reductions. It extended the 30% tax credits for wind, solar, geothermal, and EV projects. It added energy storage projects to the 30% tax credit, recognizing that the US would not achieve its 100% renewable energy goal by 2050 without energy storage. There were 10% bonus tax credits if the system was manufactured in the US and if the project was located in an energy community. OK, the projects had to comply with prevailing wage and apprenticeship programs or be reduced by 80%. The big change was that now tax-exempt organizations could obtain these tax credits directly from the IRS.
Learning Objectives
-
Understand the amount of tax credits a TES project qualifies for and if it must meet the Prevailing Wage and Apprenticeship Program. Understand
-
Understand how a thermal storage system can be charged with surplus solar and wind energy to support a clean grid
-
Describe how to submit paperwork to the IRS to receive direct payment for a thermal energy storage tax credit
-
Understand how a thermal storage project can qualify for both a tax credit and a utility rebate, and how that affects the economics
